When Vietnam first opened up to Western tourists, a popular route was what they called the 'Reunification Express', the rail line between Hanoi & Saigon. In fact, this is not one special train! The term refers to the route itself and ANY train that travels it. Nowadays, specialist travel firms have built their own carriages and attached them to the local trains... this has created a superior level of service far better suited to Western travellers, but not so 'deluxe' that you will not feel as if you are travelling on a local train. Only one cabin per carriage is 2 berth and it books out quickly, so most travel is in 4 berth carriages. The train also has a dining car, which is common to the entire train. At each end of the sleeping cabins there is a Western style toilet that is kept clean by train staff. Warning, on the Livitrans website you will see images of a 'space age' locomotive pulling the train. If you look closely, this is a digitally enhanced image where a European loco has been merged with a Livitrans carriage!!! The normal locomotive is an old' puffer'! |
